WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boosts in specific stats. Each upgrade increases item level upgrade level by 3. A random extra substat is also increased with every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item upgrading has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. However, the item used for the upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader once every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the item level, but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item upgrade from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level, if there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot of the item and the current item level. For example weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currencies.

Upgraders for items are available at many locations on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as an issue.

In Season 3, a number of new features have been added to the upgrade system. Once a player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This applies even if those items come from another set of gear.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players achieve certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a few choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specific and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are a crucial component of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System that was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be used to purchase gear of a specific rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the most complicated may require as many as 20 crests depending on the kind of gear being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by working through tasks at the appropriate level. This could mean doing outdoor activities or completing dungeons and raids in all difficulty levels to obtain lower-level gear or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons with a heroic difficulty for gear in the endgame. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it will bring some changes to the upgrade process. When a piece of equipment has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable modification is that crests have one usage therefore it's essential to use them wisely. This is especially true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up several slots.
