World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses, such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the current level of the item. The cost increases as the item level increases.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to give an extra stat boost or impact while they're being used. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors trading, or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to equipment with a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before a component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may include a suffix or prefix changing the name of the item to the upgrade (for examplefor example "Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they require to reach the same level with normal methods.

A boost upgrade is a way to modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor.
